The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding snowmobile riders it’s illegal to modify or change their sled’s exhaust for use on public trails.
The warning follows complaints about noisy snowmobiles disrupting residents near local trails. Aftermarket exhaust systems, known as “cans” or “pipes,” amplify engine noise, creating loud disturbances that carry across open fields and lakes.
Many riders swap out the original exhausts for perceived performance boosts or to draw attention. However, these modifications violate the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act (MSVA). Offenders face $110 fines and could be removed from trails.
To ensure compliance, the OPP, along with the OPP SAVE Team, will patrol trails throughout the season. Snowmobilers are urged to respect the law and maintain the peace for nearby communities.
For a quiet, safe ride, stick to the stock exhaust and enjoy the trails responsibly.
