The Ontario government is assuming direct responsibility for maintaining the Thousand Islands Parkway, a 40-kilometre scenic route in eastern Ontario. This move, which transfers costs from the St. Lawrence Parks Commission (SLPC) to the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), aims to protect local communities from rising expenses while ensuring the parkway remains in excellent condition.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria emphasized the importance of the Parkway as a landmark destination, noting that the shift will allow SLPC to focus on improving trails, campsites, and amenities. An expanded memorandum of understanding will see MTO manage maintenance and infrastructure costs, conduct a full review of the Parkway, and offer recommendations to enhance its management.
Additionally, Ontario is investing $27.5 million to resurface 17 kilometres of Highway 401 between Mallorytown and Brockville, including underpass rehabilitation and lighting upgrades. Local MPP Steve Clark welcomed the initiatives, highlighting their importance to the region’s tourism economy and transportation infrastructure.
