Sharon Nixon: Gananoque Figure Skating Club Coach
Lacing up a pair of skates at the age of two years old Sharon Nixon, a Perth Ontario native, fell in love with the sport she currently teaches with the Gananoque Figure Skating Club in Gananoque. After graduating high school Nixon attended McGill University and in her words, “left skating behind”, but would return to Gananoque in the mid 90s and continue her coaching career at the club. Growing up and loving the sport as a child Nixon says being able to give back to others has been one of the best experiences since becoming a coach.
Nixon has recently started her own skating club in Kingston but still continues to coach in Gananoque as well. She says you can make this sport what you want it to be. Like her experience, you can always take time away from it, because it will always be there waiting for you.
Nixon says it’s not the success of getting a medal or a trophy, but its the people you meet along the way that you’ll keep in touch with the rest of your life, thats so rewarding being a coach.
