The Southeast Health Unit is reminding residents to be “tick smart” as blacklegged ticks become active once temperatures rise above 4°C. These ticks can carry bacteria that cause illnesses such as Lyme Disease, Anaplasmosis, and Babesiosis—all of which are present in the region and became officially reportable in July 2023. While these diseases can lead to serious health issues, early tick removal significantly lowers the risk of infection.
To reduce exposure, wear light-coloured, tick-repellent-treated clothing, use insect repellent with DEET or Icaridin, and check yourself and your pets for ticks after outdoor activity. Prompt removal of ticks is key—Lyme and Babesiosis require 24 hours of attachment, while Anaplasmosis may only take 12 hours.
If you find a tick, check if it’s engorged and monitor for symptoms like fever, chills, or a bull’s-eye rash. For more information, visit the Health Unit’s website or contact them directly.
