Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for the region, warning of a potent spring ice storm that is expected to impact the area from late Friday into Monday. The storm will bring significant ice accretion from freezing rain, with 5 to 15 mm of ice accumulation, and up to 20 mm possible in some areas. Snow and ice pellets may also accumulate, with up to 15 cm expected.
Residents are advised to prepare for possible utility outages due to ice buildup and broken tree branches. Slippery surfaces will also pose a risk to travelers. The highest confidence for significant ice accretion is over an area stretching from Sault Ste. Marie southeast to Kingston, though the exact path remains uncertain.
A brief break in the freezing rain is expected late Saturday, but another round of freezing rain will follow. Warnings will be issued as the event approaches.
