A group of rescued Northern dogs from Lac Seul First Nation has arrived at the Ontario SPCA Leeds & Grenville Animal Centre in Brockville, ready to find their forever homes. The 10 dogs made the nearly 2,000-kilometre journey from the community northeast of Dryden just before last week’s winter storm.
This marks the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society’s first Northern animal transfer of the year, an initiative that relocates animals in need to areas where adoptive families are waiting. Seven of the dogs are now available for adoption at the Leeds & Grenville Animal Centre, while the remaining three will find homes through the Humane Society of Durham Region.
“By working together with Northern communities, we can provide these animals with the second chance they deserve,” said Arista Wogenstahl, Northern Regional Manager for the Ontario SPCA.
Last year, the SPCA transported 225 Northern animals to new homes and distributed 64,000 lbs of pet food.
Those interested in adopting can visit ontariospca.ca/leedsgrenville. If adoption isn’t an option, locals can support the cause by participating in Cupcake Day on Feb. 24, raising funds for animals in need. Visit cupcakeday.ca for more details.
