The Gananoque area is facing a significant winter storm that is expected to continue into Thursday. Environment Canada has forecasted 15 to 25 cm of snow, with peak snowfall rates of 2 to 4 cm per hour. Poor visibility due to heavy snow, along with the risk of freezing rain near Lake Ontario, will make travel difficult.
The heaviest snow is expected to fall tonight through Thursday morning, with occasional ice pellets mixed in. Freezing rain is also a concern for areas stretching from Northumberland County to Kingston, particularly early Thursday morning. This could complicate the Thursday morning commute, with significant disruptions possible.
In response to the dangerous conditions, all school buses have been canceled for the day by Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario, and schools within the Catholic and Upper Canada District School Boards will be closed.
Residents are advised to take extra precautions when traveling, especially during the morning rush hour. The snow will taper off by late Thursday morning or early afternoon, but rapidly accumulating snow may cause delays throughout the day.
