As part of the 2024 Budget, Ontario has introduced a three-year, $30 million Fire Protection Grant aimed at enhancing firefighter health and safety. The funding will support cancer prevention initiatives across 374 municipal fire departments.
Gananoque will receive $8,320, while the Township of Leeds and Thousand Islands will receive $32,921 to help implement measures that protect firefighters from occupational hazards, such as cancer risks associated with the job.
The grant is part of the province’s broader efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of first responders, providing them with the tools and resources to combat the growing concerns related to firefighter health. This funding highlights Ontario’s ongoing commitment to supporting local fire services.
