Advancing personalized medicine and infectious disease surveillance took a big step forward at KHSC in Kingston. Yesterday it was announced that Jay and Kendal Patry have donated $1 million to establish a Clinical Chair in Genomics. Doctor Parmeet Sheth has been appointed to the role.
Jay Patry explains the significance of this donation.
Genomics and Microbiology expert Doctor Parmeet Sheth has been appointed to the role. He thanked the Patry family and everyone involved for making this a reality.
Genomics focuses on using knowledge about our genes (DNA) to improve medical care. The traditional method of disease treatment was a one-size-fits-all approach developed for an average person.
In genomics, scientists identify a person’s genetic variations that might affect their risk of getting sick or how they respond to treatment.
Then, scientists turn this knowledge into personalized treatments tailored to an individual’s genetic makeup. It’s part of the emerging field of personalized medicine.
The announcement was made at Etherington Hall in Kingston’s University District.
