As the new school year begins, safety on the roads becomes crucial. With excited kids returning to school and school buses back in service, drivers are reminded to stay vigilant.
The Ontario Provincial Police advises motorists to keep their eyes on the road and avoid distractions such as phone use.
When approaching a school bus, remember that yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop, while red flashing lights and an extended “stop” arm mean you must stop.
Fines for passing a stopped bus with red lights can range from $400 to $2,000, with six demerit points for a first offense.
Parents are urged to remind children to use sidewalks, crosswalks, and follow bus safety rules.
Additionally, while sharing first day photos on social media, ensure privacy settings are secure and avoid disclosing specific school or personal details to protect against potential misuse.
