The fatal incident that saw two teens die, after a group fell through the ice on the Rideau River in Ottawa’s south end is serving as a reminder that no ice is safe ice.
We’re not ready to have people venture out on the ice in our listening area.
But when it does get colder, the OPP’s Paul Beaton says being sure the ice is safe is step one.
Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Ron Arnold if you do fall in, you have to act fast.
He says if you plan to go out on the ice make sure you have safety gear. If you’re just approaching the ice on a whim, just stay off. Even ice that appears thick can break away without warning.
