Receiving no funding from the government, the Gananoque and District Humane Society is a group that benefits the most from local fundraisers in Gananoque and the surrounding area.
Denise Smith has been with the Humane Society for a short time but understands that without the community support it would be tough to keep the doors open.
Money raised for the shelter goes to help with necessities for the animals and to make repairs to the building itself.
Smith says the community and volunteers really are the ones that keep it going.
