Being the voice of her fellow students at Gananoque Secondary School is something that Janevra Pier is very proud of. Recently the GSS senior was named Chair of Student Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board. Her term begins in August of 2022. Pier says there are several challenges that face young people today. She feels that today’s youth have many ways they can become distracted. She says youth refer to their phones and social media quite often and will use those platforms as a way of communication, but by doing this, they lack the face to face interaction with people. Pier says personal interaction away from the devices is something young people need to do more of. Being President of Student Council along with working closely with the Gananoque Public Library Board of Directors, Pier credits her teachers, principals and guidance councilors, who have helped her take action on her ideas, which also led to the formation of an Environmental Club that continues today. Pier has plenty of post secondary aspirations which include going to University to become a psychologist as well as maybe going to law school.
