WEATHER CAUSE FOR INCREASE IN TURTLE INJURIES

A state of emergency is declared for Ontario turtles, after its main trauma centre in Peterborough took in a lot more turtles this year. Executive and Medical Director Sue Carstairs says there were almost 750 turtles admitted to the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. She thinks more turtles are getting injured because the weather is causing them to move a lot more.

As a result of moving more, there's a higher chance of turtles being hit by cars.

Carstairs says if people find a turtle crossing or about to cross the road, she says they can pull over if they feel safe to do so, and help the turtle cross the road in the direction that they are going in. If people find an injured turtle, she said they should confine the turtle in a tupperware container, with a top, and ventilation, and call the trauma centre.
